[NEWS] Korean popular idols cross boundaries globally with popular songs!

Big Bang was recently featured on Malaysian newspaper ‘Berita Harian’ and here is the excerpt.

Nowadays, Korean music fever or Kpop has been very popular among Kpop fans in Asia. As if, it has become part of the culture in many Asian countries. Our country, Malaysia is also one of them.

It started with Seo Taiji & boys and after 2 decades, many popular names started to color the music industry. They rised so fast until they got high profit and not only for them but also for their label company as well. Big Bang, one of the famous group for example managed to collect approximately RM50 million in 2007.

Last year, Taeyang and another girl group, 2NE1 also got into many charts in US and Canada. This year, Big Bang with their 4th mini album, TONIGHT has become a phenomenon who managed to get into top 10 in the iTunes chart and became the only one so far in the top 100 non English albums.

In America, these Korean artist have become very popular until popular producers from the US such as Will.i.am and Kanye West have shown their interest to work with them.

2NE1 and Big Bang are major representatives of Kpop spreading into America. I hear 2NE1 has an american album that I’m excited for and it’d be nice if Big Bang followed. They’re both so talented that it’s a waste to not spread their talents further than Asia in my opinion. Would you guys be ok with Big Bang advancing into the American market?

  1. I would of liked Big Bang to have the American album first since they are more experienced. BUT hopefully they will follow

  2. Heck yeah! I would be ecstatic for BIGBANG to come into the American Market… I missed them performing last year @ the KMF… So I still dream of seeing them live and getting their autographs here in the USA ^___^

  3. KUASA K-POP means The POWER of K-POP.

They really “haunted” Malaysians even my little 4-yrs-old niece knows their songs

      • i feel so happy coz BIGBANG is finally being recognized in Malaysian media.. all this while, when it comes to kpop, the first thing that came into the media’s mind is suju.. haha..
the reporter really did a great job.. finally they make a good article about kpop.. :)

      • @hally89 i know right. im ecstatic to see BIGBANG’s name instead of Suju… no offense hey, hahaha. i like suju too but usually wheneva you say kpop the first thing they think about is suju.

happy BB is getting recognition by the m’sian press, its about time! LOL. :]

      • @hally…lol..exactly,before SM artist totally the popular one in m’sia…n i’m surprised BB featured in this paper….i guess people just can’t resist BB’s charm =)…i know BB fans are growing here when GDnTOP beat HoMin in 8TV jukebox(by voting)..huhu…and for sure,i success making my friends a VIPz..hoho..

    • it today news paper…my friend saw this in the shop…but she not tell me…ahhh if i know…i buy already…

  4. OMG!! When was this out?! What date did the berita harian release this??
PLEASE TELL ME! If its today..I am so buying the news paper. LOL

  5. I would love for Big Bang to make it in America…however lol I’d like them to do it in a different manner. I think the only way they are gonna make it here is if they have a really big song that crosses over in America (and I mean really cross over i.e. making the itunes singles chart or billboard 100). I don’t know any artist other than Shakira, that made it by actually coming over here. Any time a kpop artist comes over here to break america, they never make it here, and lose their “reign” in Korea. Rain, Wondergirls, Se7en, Boa- I mean their popular but they lost that number 1 spot they used to have. It’s not like Korea, having a popular producer means nothing in the US…it’s luck and having people like what your trying to sell. And unfortunately these Korean papers…or reporters…or whatever are misinterpreting the success of other kpop stars making it seem like they made it big in America when they haven’t really even made a dent (i.e. calling Rain an international star-when literally nobody knows him, or the wondergirls etc), and it’s making it seem like it will be super easy. I just don’t want Big Bang to lose the love they already have. Sorry if that seemed like a long speech haha. I feel like some of these producers are just taking these artist money knowing damn well hard it will be because it doesn’t matter what producer’s name is on your song :/ Rant done :)

    • well said tats true although we will always love our BIGBANG boys
but it seems that korea removes thier love if they “fail” at making it big here
      in the states

    • Totally agree with you, Tiffany. Also, I’m very afraid of what changes the American music industry would force upon them. I feel like they’d have less say over how they wanted to make music, and that they’d be criticized for their accents and style… Ah, it’s tricky.

    • Rihanna made it in the US. I think BB has what it takes to make it too! :D Their songs already have a western vibe. The only thing they need to do is promote them over here.

      • Rihanna started out in the US (she was never a star beforehand) and nobody knew she wasn’t american until they heard her in interviews ;). I’m black too and I swear most people didn’t know she was from barbados until her 3rd album. And being from Barbados is seen different then from Korea (unfortunately) It’s not going to be so easy for Big Bang. Because if anyone had a chance of making it, it would have been se7en and now se7en isn’t se7en anymore. I really don’t want to see that happen to Big Bang.

    • I have to agree with cha. There’s something on the back of my mind that doesn’t really want BIGBANG to debut over here. When it comes to Asians making it big, it’s just doesn’t happen over here (in the exception of Far East though they’ve been doing great).

I also don’t wanna break their spirits when they do ended up failing to make it big here. Sometimes it’s best for great groups to stay where they are instead of trying so hard to be recognized worldwide.

  6. I might be the only one saying this, but I’ve always been afraid of BIGBANG to crossover to America..Why? Everytime a non-american artist makes it in the USA they become less and less of what they were before they made it there..the american record labels at one point decide the very thing that made them famous overseas is no longer working or “in” and they change,BIG TIME..for instance,Shakira..pttff I remember how “indie” that woman used to be,her songs and everything, not exactly commercial yet succesful, and now look at her,she can’t go out without having her hair dyed blonde and translating all her songs into english. I don’t want that with the boys,I’d be really sad if they chose to change their ways in order to be a success in America..Don’t take me wrong I’m happy they’re taking over international charts, yet I’m a little afraid of what might happen if they debut in the USA..I don’t see the point, they’re already known worldwide for what they do back in SK,ptff sorry but that’s what I feel like O.o

    • I agree with these thoughts….I love BigBang and I love that they are getting recognized worldwide, however I don’t want them to move or debut in the USA because I feel as if they will change and I truly don’t want that…I don’t want them to become corrupt, for them to just want fortune and fame…I don’t want them to join the illuminati or whatever evil and bad things the entertainment industry has…I want them to stay pure and loveable, I want them to continue to work because they love it and for them to stay true to themselves…I believe Kanye West is a bad example to them ( I believe that he is in Illuminati and BigBang don’t need that!)…I am sorry if I am upsetting other readers and fans but I think they should stay in Korea…I would love them to do World Tours but to leave to live somewhere else, no I don’t think that is a good idea…They are humble, loveable, funny, and so great…I think going to America would change most of that…

        • lol sorry to hurt u all but bigbang crossed over long ago..taeyangs ill be there seungris vvip g-dragons butterfly and t.o.ps turn it up don’t forget our lovely daesung when he had some song where he had black wings and shez soz guys but 2 little too late they crossed over before 2010..yg,sment,loent,jype all in it guys oh also brand new stardom

  7. whoever wrote the article really is genius. malaysian press are genius. they know what’s the best. if i’m not mistaken bigbang and 2ne1 voted as the best male and female kpop group in malaysia. i guess malaysian love the best :D

  8. Yess..Big Bang has many fans in Malaysia..love it..coz i’m frm MALAYSIA too…love BIG BANG..Love all MVIPs..:)

  9. I don’t think it’s necessary for Big Bang to debuts in the U.S. because they’re already a success I just want them to bring their fine selves closer to me in Canada so I can see them in concert.

  10. My only problem with BigBang coming to America is that… Well, I feel like they’d be judged and hated on… Just because America is harsh like that.

    Though they have a better chance than most. The groups that have like 7 people, the US would just laugh at. Having 9 girls that look hot is okay, but we tend to link more to them having personality (not meaning to bash or anything.) Plus, falling into the bad steryotype that all asians look the same, having big groups would just be bad….;;;

If America can become more accepting and not judge so quickly, then BigBang will rock this place. <3

  11. Idk. I’m so torn on this issue. I want them to have mega success but at the same time I’m just scared for them. The american entertainement system can be a cold lonely scary place, I think. In korea, the ent systems take care of almost every single thing for celebrities. But here? It’s like a jungle basically. There are no restrictions on what a celeb can be allowed to do (yes this means more freedom but too much ‘freedom’ can lead stars to the wrong path), paparrazzi are cuh-razy, ‘fans’ can like you one second and hate you the next, a lot of celebs in the music industry are bad influences etc etc Plus I think TOP and Daesung would feel really homesick. Idk they seem really atrached to their country and its culture. Can’t they just stay in Korea, make really great songs and keep charting in the U.S? Just don’t forget about US and Canada when you do tours boys and I’ll be happy. ^^

  12. I really want them to come to the U.S. In my opinion, they are a million times better than the mainstream music in the U.S. I don’t even listen to American music anymore because it has become so bad. I’m so happy that I found K-pop, otherwise I would be living a very music-less life.

  13. And if they were to come to America, there is one thing they have to do and that is ADVERTISE. America runs on advertisements. They need ads on billboards, TV, radios, buses, signs, popular websites. And I’m sure YG wouldn’t have a problem with that. (Does anyone recall Big Bang’s expensive bus advertisements?)

  14. One last thing, if they tour here,I hope they don’t just go to the East and West coasts. There’s land in the middle too, with people on it! It seems like no one ever has shows in the midwest.

  15. For those who are comparing this situation to Rihanna’s own…you really can’t…Barbados is an English speaking country and she lived in the USA for some time before making it big…Plus she is another example of a bad example to follow…in the beginning she was good and pure but now (another illuminati) she is corrupt…I really don’t want BigBang to subject themselves to this…I feel as if they should just stay in Korea and just do world tours and promote around the world…You can’t just think about them coming the USA and becoming…but you also have to think about what they will lose by doing that…Is it really worth it? Is fame and fortune really worth the self-loathing and giving your soul to the devil?! (O_o) I’m sorry if I am upsetting any readers but it just upsets me and scares me to see where the American entertainment industry is going…I just don;t want BB to be sucked into it…

  16. Aye, I’m so torn as well. I think…what I want is for them to stay and be successful in Korea, top charts andd do tours worldwide. I feel like they’d just be criticized constantly for every little thing and that would kind of crush their spirit a bit, y’know. Just thinking abt makes my heart skip a beat (not the good kind , the nervous scared kind).

  17. I hope I don’t get bashed for saying this -.- but America doesn’t deserve Big Bang in my opinion. We’re too corrupt and stereotypical and I’m afraid that our entertainment industry is gonna change big bang into something they’re more familiar with. This happens a lot with artists who try to debut here in America (Se7en and other Korean artists, but also artists like Jay Sean, if u guys have heard of him.) Before debuting in USA, these artists have their own individual flavour that made them so popular, but when they came here, either immediately or gradually America made them change their image and their music into something more familiar and they lost the very flavour that made the fans love them so much. So as much as I love Big bang and as much as I want them to be super-mega-successful and come here to NY so I can finally go to one of their concerts, I feel like debuting here will do more bad than good. Big Bang is just too good for America, and we don’t deserve to have them here just yet.

  18. it’s ok that they debut in the US, but US is in recession. I think it’s better if they debut in China coz this country has a giant market to buy their albums. Am I correct?
